Week 9: Denver Staff Reports

Denver wins their 6th straight and moves to 8-1 following a 55-13 beatdown of Utah State.

After falling down 10-13 early in the 2nd quarter, the Pioneers did not give up another score and finished the game on a 45-0 run. All three passers scored a TD in this one, with Josiah Cockrell again leading the way on 10/13 passing for 126 yds. But the run game was at the forefront, as Denver rushed 58 times for 265yds and 4 TDs. RB Thomas Eckert led the way with 107 yds and 2 TDs on 27 rushes, while Thomas Moran backed him up with 75 yds and a TD on 14 attempts.

Limiting penalties (2 for 15yds) and not committing a turnover were key in this game. The defense did show up as well, as the Aggies QB Leroy Anderson completed just 45% of his passes for 188 yds and the rushing attack was limited to just 3.2ypr.

The Pioneers also welcomed their first commit of the season- #1989 ranked 3* CB Jay Hood from Las Vegas, NV joins the program, adding speed to a CB rotation that is rapidly approaching graduation.

Denver climbs to #16, but face their toughest competition yet in the upcoming week, matching up with the #2 team in the Mountain West West, the San Diego State Aztecs. The winner of this game is pretty likely to be promoted next season.
