The weather in Syracuse was dreadful with 20 degree game time temperatures, wind, and snow. Inside the Carrier Dome, though, it was smoking as the Orange and Clemson put on a show. The game was a virtual dead heat statistically (19 first downs apiece and 4 yards separating the offensive totals) and on the scoreboard as the Tigers fell 30-27 on the road.
Syracuse broke the game open in the second by tackling tailback William Root in the endzone for a safety then posting TD passes from Todd Her to TE Andrew Rader and FB James Starnes. Senior CB Willis Petty helped the defense hold on with 7 tackles, three passes defensed, and a fumble forced and recovered. The team has a bye next week. 3 LB Michael Ewing becomes the first player to sign with the Orange
