Last year the Kentucky Wildcats were forgot at the end of the year and instead replaced by a Nebraska team that some had thought did not deserve to be in the College Football Playoff over Kentucky. Nebraska ended up losing in the first round which further made the voices turn up, but regardless Kentucky was left out of an opportunity to prove itself and show the rest of the country that it could compete on a larger stage.
Instead, Kentucky lost a bowl game that at points seemed like the team didn't even want to play it. Dejected and
tire
d, Kentucky ended the season and hobbled off the field in a defeated state – som
ething that just a few weeks would have seemed unthinkable.
At 7-4 the Wildcats are looking at a good season – but they were on pace to have a great one. Winning their first four games was an accomplishment and really made the country take notice of a determined team t
hat was ready to shake the doubters.
Then they lost to South Carolina.
It was at South Carolina that the Wildcats seemed to change. A 13-point loss wasn't the end of the world and they could certainly hope to still win the conference with one loss. But then they lose to Georgia, then Tennessee in back-to-back weeks. If they weren't doing well before, the loss to Tennessee had put them on life support.
Sure, Kentucky would rebound with two big wins over Middle Tennessee State and Ole Miss, but the damage was done. A loss last week to Vanderbilt all but shut the door on a good season filled with potential that has gone for not in Lexington.
